We know that hurricane season can cause devastation for families. Being proactive to protect your property from water damage can potentially save you thousands of dollars - and your home.
Protecting Your Home From Water Damage
There are things property owners can be doing now to prepare their home and prevent water damage when a hurricane comes.
Routinely clean gutters and downspouts - Ensure that water can move away from your house by keeping gutters, downspouts and splashpads free of debris and in proper working condition.
Seal foundation - Routinely check your foundation for cracks and potential leaks, and seal the cracks with mortar and masonry caulk or hydraulic cement, which will expand and fill gaps completely.
Install flood vents and sump pumps - If you haven’t already, installing flood vents and a sump pump helps water move more freely through your home and into the ground. By letting water move more freely, you can mitigate major damage to your walls and foundation.

Even with proactively mitigating against water damage, it is still important to take extra precautions when a hurricane is on the horizon. Some last-minute preparations to protect your home from hurricane flooding:
Sandbags - Aim to stack sandbags at least 2 feet high around the perimeter of your home. If you don’t have enough sandbags, you can use garbage bags filled ⅓ of the way with water to fill in the gaps.
Brace garage doors - Storm surge can come quickly and aggressively. Most garage doors can’t stand the force of a storm surge alone, so add a brace to your door to prevent water from coming in.
Turn off electricity and raise appliances off the floor - This is especially important for your safety! If you return to a flood in your home, you want to make sure that water isn’t potentially electrified, or cause more damage from a fire.
