Holiday Fire Safety: Protecting Your Home & Family

Key Prevention Tips For A Safe And Festive Season

The holidays are a special time of year, filled with warm fires, twinkling lights, and delicious food and drink. But the holidays are also one of the most dangerous times of year for house fires.

Festive decorations (excluding Christmas trees) are the cause of about 830 home fires each year, and the danger is especially high in December, when 50% of all decoration fires are started by candles. Holiday meals create another significant fire risk - all the activity surrounding holiday cooking makes Thanksgiving, Christmas, and New Year's the top three days of the year for home cooking fires. Holiday Safety Checklist

There are preventative steps you can take to have a safe holiday season and protect your home:

  1. Inspect Holiday Lights - Check your light strands for frayed wires, pinched cords, and broken bulbs before use.

  2. Don’t Overload Electrical Outlets - Don’t string more than 3 lights together, and plug decorations into different outlets to prevent overloading one.

  3. Opt for Battery-Operated Candles - Consider battery-operated candles that look real instead of using open flames.

  4. Maintain Your Christmas Tree - Keep your tree away from heat sources, and water it every day. Throw your tree out after Christmas.

  5. Keep The Kitchen Clear - Maintain a "kid-free" and "pet-free" zone around the stove and oven while you are cooking.
